years, Gordon Johnston is the Director of Music at The Church of St. John the Evangelist, where
he plays the organ and conducts the choir. He is also directs of The Strings of St. John's,
a local community orchestra. His other musical pursuits are being Director of Music for
the Anglican Community at St. Paul's University, composing and playing the harp. Gordon
started his musical studies at a young age and went on to receive bachelors and masters
degrees at Brigham Young University, USA. In 2003 he received his Doctorate in Sacred
Music from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana, USA.

Cost: $10 members, $15 non-members pre-registered.
Maximum of 15 persons per session.
As singers, our instrument is our whole body, not just our vocal chords. Holding
tension in our bodies and improper alignment affects vocal quality.
The Alexander Technique provides tools to improve the entire structure and tone of the body.
Students are encouraged to observe the thought processes and unnecessary tensions associated
with their activities. As the principles of the technique are assimilated, over time the student begins
to develop greater freedom of movement, poise and less stress.
While the technique is best learned through a series of private lessons with a qualified teacher,
participants of this workshop will be introduced to these basics including a "hands-on" demonstration:
-- the 5 principals of the technique (e.g. "directions" and "inhibitions")
-- preparation for standing prior to singing
-- how to interpret instructions from voice teachers and music directors.
The workshop will be led by Brigitte Caron. She studied Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa.
She was introduced to Alexander Technique in 1984 and took private lessons for 9 years before
training to become a teacher at the Toronto School of the Alexander Technique (1993-1996). She
has been teaching in the Ottawa region since 1996 while continuing to work with Master
Alexander Technique teachers. She plans to open a teacher training school in 2012.
Brigitte is the main teacher at the Siempre Tango School of Argentine Tango
(http://www.siempretango.ca) with her husband
Francis Caron (Director and Teacher). They also perform together.

CAMMAC-Ottawa-Gatineau. Gerald also taught recorders at the Bethesda Community Center in
Washington, D.C. while playing bassoon with the National Symphony Orchestra (1960-62). He

Join us for an introductory exploration of singing vocal jazz and an afternoon of singing.
This participatory workshop will include: discussion and practice of 'swing' feel, general vocal jazz
terminology, how jazz singing differs from other styles, frequently occurring harmonies, what
'guide tones' are and how they can lead your ear to help you improvise, and standard blues form.
We'll listen to how different artists have treated the same song. We'll create a "vocal big band"
together. We'll also sing through a couple of sections of a jazz mass, and explore the similarities and
differences between it and a traditional setting. No prior jazz experience is required, but some prior
singing experience is helpful.
Elise Letourneau is the founding music director of Capital Vox, which has been hailed as

Messiah Choruses: Come learn Handel's Messiah in a relaxed setting!
For those who wish to improve their reading and knowledge of the Messiah choruses in preparation
for the December performance, we offer three Saturday morning rehearsals.
Organist and Choir master Alan Thomas will conduct the rehearsals. Rehearsing with Alan is
always great fun - his piano accompaniment will jazz up any chorus in a surprising way! He will go
over all the choruses which are to be sung on December 4th. Usually, we look at about half-a-dozen
choruses every week, rehearsing some of the more difficult ones more than once.
No pre-registration necessary! But please come early on your first rehearsal, to register.

We are overflowing with enthusiasm about the 2009/2010 annual winter concert. Dr. Deirdre Piper,
composer and recently retired professor at Carleton University, has offered to compose and conduct this
year's program. This is a wonderful and exciting opportunity for CAMMAC choristers and instrumentalists,
and we encourage you all to line up to participate.
Born and educated in the United Kingdom, Deirdre Piper studied at the University of Manchester (PhD in
historical musicology) and at the Royal Manchester College of Music (organ and cello). Having held
teaching positions at the University of Manchester and Huddersfield Polytechnic, she emigrated to
Canada and joined the staff of Carleton University in 1972. Dr. Piper retired this year from the position
of Associate Professor of Music and Supervisor of Performance Studies in the Music program. She is
active as a performer (organist, pianist, choral conductor), and is Organist and Director of Choirs at St Matthias
Anglican Church in Ottawa. As a composer, she has produced works for various solo, chamber and choral media.
She is a member of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, the Canadian Musical Heritage Society, and the
Canadian League of Composers. She serves on the board of the Association of Canadian Women Composers,
is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, and is affiliated with SOCAN.
The "Canticles of Asaph" is a very approachable and interesting modern setting of three Psalms. Reviews of other
works of Dr. Piper have described her compositions as "charming, and full of delightful rhythms" with "exquisite
lines". Discovering this new work with the composer herself promises to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

2:00-5:00 p.m.
St. Matthias Anglican Church, 555 Parkdale Ave. (directions
are here)
$10 for members, $15 for non-members; registration at the door $5 extra.
The Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez is synthesis of popular and liturgical styles based on South American folk music, in particular
from Argentina. The various and beautiful rhythms are a delight to sing and play. This work was an instant success when it
was published in 1963 and remains a favourite especially for amateur choirs worldwide. The Foreword from the Lawson-Gould
edition says, "It proves that indigenous musical forms can communicate the highest values of life and that religious beliefs can
be conveyed through a popular medium of expression".
Gloria Jean Nagy is a well- known performer, teacher, choral conductor, clinician, adjudicator and administrator. She is a
vocal instructor at Carleton University, De La Salle High School and Canterbury High School . She maintains a busy vocal
studio and conducts more than twenty choral concerts a year. She is the founding director of the vocal/piano duo Cantabile
(Gloria Jean Nagy & Katarina Jovic) celebrating its twenty-third season in 2009.She is currently founding director of The Amabile
Singers of Nepean ,the West Ottawa Children's Chorus, director of the Kanata Choral Society and choir director/ pianist for St.
Paul's Presbyterian Church. In May 2009, Ms Nagy was named special teacher of the year for the Ottawa Region branch of
ORMTA. In 1994, Ms. Nagy published A Singers' Overview to Canadian Contemporary Vocal Literature for the 1994 NATS
convention which is now available through the Canadian Music Centre in Toronto for a small fee.
We need a guitarist to enhance the instrumentation of this piece. If you are interested, please contact Penny Annand by January 15.

OC Transpo routes 18, 87 and 156
This year we shall be singing in Easter sunrise at a new location. The First Unitarian Congregation where we usually
sing, is having its own early service and we have been welcomed by Woodroffe United Church. This also has a large
east facing window so we are still blessed by the rising sun as we lift our voices in Messiah choruses.
As Jane will be busy at Cleary Avenue we have asked Dr James Wright to accompany us. We have two young
soloists - soprano Samhurdhi Gunawardena and tenor Ben Buchanan, and the inspirational Alan Thomas
to lead us - so all is right with the world!
The morning will start as usual at 6:30 am with coffee, muffins and friendship.
Tickets, still only $5, will be available at Leading Note and Book Bazaar after March 19th, and at the door.
If you intend coming but can't buy a ticket before Easter Sunday please let Janet (613-728-9657) know so that
we will have enough muffins for all. Talking of which, contributions of muffins will be gratefully received.
