
DUSCHENES, Mario 1923 - 2009
Flautist, conductor, music educator, beloved husband, father and
grandfather, Mario Duschenes, died peacefully in hospital on Saturday,
January 31, 2009. He is survived by his five children Jeremy (Julia), Monica
(Chris), Michael (Kathy), Peter (Sarah) and Christopher (Vicky), twelve
grandchildren and his brother Rolf. An immigrant to Canada, Mario arrived in
Montreal in 1948 and quickly embraced his adoptive country - its landscape
as well as its culture.
A leading figure in music education, he wrote recorder methods used by
thousands of children around the world and regularly conducted symphony
concerts for young people with every major orchestra in Canada. He made over
thirty recordings including several with his friend Jean-Pierre Rampal.
Mario received the Order of Canada in 1985 and held honorary doctorates from
Concordia University in Montreal and Memorial University in St. John's,
Newfoundland. Visitation will take place at the Mount-Royal Funeral Complex,
1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, QC from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on
Friday, February 6. Funeral service will be held at the same location on
Saturday, February 7 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
